3 Easy Ways to Care For Your Leather Shoes Perfectly

Quality shoes made of leather can last for years without being damaged if only you know how to care for them. Leather shoes are very sensitive to water and chemicals which can easily damage them.

Caring for your leather shoes is not as complicated as it seems. Whether your shoe is made of smooth leather, faux, nubuck, or suede, here is a list of efficient ways to properly take care of your shoes

1. Clean Your Shoe Regularly

The first and most crucial shoe care tip is to properly clean your shoes. Before you can care for your leather shoes, you need to remove coarse dirt and dust. This is done by using saddle soap or a shoe cleaner depending on the level of soiling.

The best way to remove wet dirt is to use a damp cloth. If the dirt has dried on, you can use a classic shoe polish brush. However, you should only wet-clean suede if absolutely necessary. After damp cleaning, leave your shoes to dry at room temperature.

2. Apply shoe conditioners

After drying out your shoes, you can then apply conditioners. This helps to prolong the life span of your shoes and maintain their appearance. Smooth leather should be regularly treated with shoe polish or wax to remain soft and supple.

Suede, on the other hand, should never be treated with shoe polish or other greasy products. This will stick the fine fibers together and ruin the velvety look of the suede. Special products for suede are the best option.

3. Keep shoes away from direct sunlight

Direct sunlight or excess heat can result in stiffening your shoe leather thereby resulting in crumbling. It is best to keep your shoes away from sunlight and keep them in a controlled environment. This gives them a longer life span.
